1985 – 1986

This series of photographs represent the work from my graduation from Sydney College of the Arts (1986) final year exhibition.

The series began on a cold, sunny day when I was walking with a friend in a local park on my first serious LSD trip.

A white picket fence that circled a baseball diamond caught my eye and became my subject. When this fence was subsequently demolished, I began searching for another like fence.

This led me to Sydney’s Randwick Racecourse where I found a suitable fence and my new subjects – metal mesh rubbish bins, “tables” (designed to hold trays of drinks) and their shadows cast onto the bitumen of the racecourse’s expansive carpark.

With this work I look to inquire into the contentious relationship between the photograph and reality. Specifically, to find out whether a photograph could, like the optical art of Bridget Riley. Victor Vasarely, et. Al, deceive the eye.

I recommend that the viewer dwell a moment on each photograph in order to experience the full visual effects.
