People

1976 – 2007

I do not consider myself to be, a photographer of people.

Over time however I have encountered a number of people who have kindly and generously permitted me to take their photograph.

Some of these are of the “street photography” genre while others are more considered portraits.

I acknowledge my debt to Diane Arbus.

Luna Park

1984

In 1984 Sydney’s harbourside amusement park, Luna Park, was still struggling to overcome the legacy of its 1979 Ghost Train fire in which six people died. With the cooperation of the parks management I was permitted to set up a “studio” (a bed sheet!) on the premises where I could photograph visitors to the park.

For the sitter to be eligble to be photographed there was only one condition – they must have some kind of memento of their visit. I acknowledge my debt to August Sander.

(a short film)

Made using the last rolls of 110 black & white film available in Sydney at the time.

When exhibited, the photographs are hung at 45 degrees to the wall so that when the viewer walks along a short film, flip book like, is formed.
